message : unable to update launcher

i click on minecraft launcher and it starts to upload a update. Then a message appears and it reads Unable to update launcher.

i signed out of my account and signed back in, but the problem remains. I deleted minecraft from my applications and downloaded again and still it will not update. I have no way of entering the game to play.
