Blocks and particles render black until resources are reloaded

Description

Starting with Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.11, I have been experiencing a rendering issue where blocks and particles appear completely black.

Players, entities, and water continue to render normally. The issue seems to specifically affect blocks and particles rather than the entire game's rendering.

The issue is present from Minecraft 1.21.11 through the latest version I have tested, 26.3 Snapshot 6.

Version testing

I tested multiple versions in fresh vanilla instances.

  • 1.21.10 and earlier: Works correctly

  • 1.21.11 and newer: Broken

  • 26.3 Snapshot 6: Broken

This appears to indicate that the issue was introduced in 1.21.11 and has persisted through newer versions.

The issue can be temporarily fixed by reloading resources

The most important part of the issue is that reloading the game's resources fixes the black rendering.

For example:

  • Pressing F3 + T to reload resources fixes the issue.

  • Opening/reloading the resource pack screen also fixes the issue.

After the resources are reloaded, the blocks and particles render correctly.

However, the problem returns every time I completely close and relaunch the game. I have to reload the resources again after every launch before the blocks and particles render correctly.

What is affected

Rendered correctly:

  • Players

  • Other entities

  • Water

Rendered incorrectly:

  • Blocks

  • Particles

Reproduction

  1. Launch Minecraft 1.21.11 or a newer version.

  2. Enter a world.

  3. Observe the blocks and particles.

  4. Blocks and particles appear black, while players, entities, and water continue to render normally.

  5. Press F3 + T to reload resources.

  6. The blocks and particles begin rendering correctly.

  7. Close and relaunch Minecraft.

  8. The issue occurs again and resources have to be reloaded again.

Additional information

The issue occurs in fresh vanilla instances, and the problem is not permanently resolved by reloading resources. The fact that F3 + T or reloading the resource pack screen immediately fixes the rendering suggests that something may be failing to initialise or load correctly during the initial game launch.

The issue has been present since 1.21.11 and remains present in 26.3 Snapshot 6.
