As an example, using the cactus_flower.png with it’s accompanying mcmeta file the flower can basically be seen at infinite distance with default game settings (i.e. a brand new game-generated options.txt) when the texture is either 16x or 32x.
However, as the image is scaled up through other viable texture resolutions (64x, 128x, 256x, 512x) the level at which the cactus_flower is rendered drops drastically (see screenshots for the distance at which the texture renders fully again).
As HD textures are still supported by the game the expectation would be that a texture that is simply just being scaled up will still render consistently.
There appears to be some sort of issue with how mipmap_strategy strict_cutout functions when sampling pixels on larger resolution textures.
Whilst a workaround is to change the mipmap_strategy or alpha_cutoff_bias it would be expected that this shouldn’t be necessary, especially when the texture is the one Mojang provide just at a higher pixel resolution.
