Villagers Holding Shearable Items Can Be Sheared

Villagers can be sheared while equipped with certain items that are normally removable using shears. This has been tested with saddles, horse armor, and carpets. Using shears on a villager while it is holding one of these items allows the item to be obtained; removing the item from the villager’s in-hand display and allowing an infinite amount of these items to be obtained. This was not able to be replicated with shears inside of dispensers.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open Minecraft: Java Edition on version 26.3.

  2. Create a new Creative singleplayer world with default settings.

  3. Locate a village, and acquire a leatherworker or shepherd villager.

  4. Give yourself shears, as well as emeralds and requisite items requested by the villager for trading.

  5. Trade with them and level them up until they offer to trade carpets, saddles, or horse armor.

  6. Hold out an emerald, and the villager will begin cycling through their available trades.

  7. Once the villager is visually holding out leather horse armor, carpets, or a saddle, quickly swap to your shears and right click the villager.

Observed Result:

The villager will lose their held item and drop the items shown in the trade.

Expected Result:

The villager would not be shearable, and the trade menu would appear instead.
