In Minecraft Java Edition 26.4-snapshot-4, when using a spear charge by sprinting into a stationary mob, the damage dealt by each spear material is inconsistent with the expected tier progression. The observed damage values are: Wooden 4, Golden 4, Stone 5, Copper 5, Iron 6, Diamond 7, and Netherite 7. Based on the progression and the fact that Netherite is the highest tier, the Netherite spear should deal 8 damage, but it only deals 7. This makes the Netherite spear no stronger than the Diamond spear for sprinting charge attacks.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Launch Minecraft Java Edition 26.4-snapshot-4.
2. Obtain spears of all materials: wooden, golden, stone, copper, iron, diamond, and netherite.
3. Spawn a stationary mob.
4. Sprint toward the mob and perform a spear charge attack (hold right-click while sprinting).
5. Record the damage dealt by each spear material.
6. Observe the damage values: Wooden 4, Golden 4, Stone 5, Copper 5, Iron 6, Diamond 7, Netherite 7.
Expected Behavior:
The Netherite spear should deal 8 damage, continuing the tier progression from Diamond (7) as the highest-tier material, consistent with other Netherite weapons.
Observed Behavior:
The Netherite spear deals only 7 damage, the same as the Diamond spear, breaking the expected material progression.
Impact:
Medium — This reduces the incentive to upgrade to a Netherite spear and creates an inconsistency in weapon tier progression. It also makes the Netherite spear less rewarding for players who invest in the highest-tier material.

Thanks for trying to reproduce this. Please note that during a spear charge, you need to keep your view level and look straight ahead horizontally to deal maximum damage. If you tilt your view even slightly downward, the charge angle becomes misaligned, which reduces your effective speed and lowers the damage. In your video, you were looking slightly downward, which caused the angle to be off. In my video, I kept my aim level and dealt maximum damage without any speed loss. You should be able to reproduce it by keeping your aim straight ahead as shown in my video.
I see what you mean. If I charge with an angle of 6.01° or less from the horizontal, both deal 7 damage. At 6.02° or greater, the netherite still deals 7 damage, but the diamond only 6. Iron spears deal 6 damage if the angle is 20.31° or less, and beyond that deal 5. Presumably other tiers also have damage output overlap when sprinting into a mob at particular angles, so I will retitle the report to reflect this. This behavior may be intended, since there is still an advantage to using eg. a netherite spear over a diamond one for charge attacks, namely the greater ease of dealing the maximum damage.
Here is the revised English reply with the last sentence changed as you requested:
Thanks for looking into this. I don't think this is intended behavior. Experienced spear users will almost always attack while looking straight ahead horizontally, so hitting at a bad angle is uncommon in practice. As a result, in most real fights the Netherite spear ends up dealing slightly less damage than it should. Also, at the optimal angle, all other tiers deal their expected damage—only Netherite does not. The fact that the maximum damage itself is wrong is strong evidence that this is not intentional. If this were intended, the advantage of Netherite over other spears would merely be a wider angle tolerance, not a higher maximum damage—unlike upgrades between other spear materials, which improve both angle tolerance and maximum damage.

I can’t reproduce this- for me, diamond spear always deals 6 and netherite spear deals 7. This happens in 26.3 as well.
