Anytime, even on a blockless world. I have never had such severe memory issues on my older, non-gaming computers. The launcher won't let me allocate more than xms1G or xmx1024M. On older versions I ran fine with **512mb** memory.
How to reproduce:
Go to new launcher, do the xmx1024M or whatever it is
Do a world that has a crazy creation*, (like many of mine)
Crashes to memory related things
(*This happens for me even on blockless worlds and multiplayer)
Sometimes this is so bad, my game closes without warning.

I'd rather not have short or tiny because my computer can handle Amplified and Far render distance, but can't handle far and superflat? I think this is definitely not about my specs, because my computer is a beefy steak. I'm still quite convinced this is a version issue.
Your computer can not handle Far and Amplified because you have too less Memory.
Having 4.5 GB Memory on a 32 bit OS is pointless.
Your 32 bit OS can adress max. 4 GB (the superfluous 0,5 GB are only heating your room).
minus address space for the RAM of your Graphics card (assuming 1 GB)
minus address space for other I/O (assuming 0.2 GB
----------
Remaining: 2.8 GB for all software (incl. Windows, drivers, etc)
I just tested amplified+far, and only lagspiked upon word generation, and averaged @ 30-50fps and on normal + far @ 60-70fps and superflat+far average @ 100 - 165 fps. (on 13w38a,(with a world from 13w39b, latest) because the latest snapshot may be built off of 1.6.4)
Amplified is around 18 - 25 fps on recording.
Don't create worlds your computer can't handle.
Set the Render distance to "Short" or "Tiny"
