[MC-34072] Crash When Given Item

When I did the command (/give @p 255) in a command block I had a crash, when I did the command in my chat box, still crash. I'm really confused, and just for the record I have no clue what the id 255 is.

As a general rule, don't play with commands when you don't know what you're doing.
