Creepers being immune to knockback a tick before they explode

When I was mining, I found one. Well, he found me. A quick reaction made me punch him in the face, but he was not knocked back, resulting in a painful death. I tested it on Creative after that, and it seems creepers that are about to explode are immune to knockback.
