How was the level created? Is it a random seed by starting a new map in a new local game (or random server map), or is this a customized map?

Random seed. Been using it for a while, through several updates and now with 1.4.4 it won't load, it just crashes.

Yes, the world may be corrupt (well, in fact, The World is corrupt , but this is just a cheap pun), nevertheless Minecraft shouldn't crash.

It is still crashing. I'm starting to think the level is just corrupted and it's not a game engine bug. Just my opinion.

You have potion effects with ID 0 in your players (Don't do that!). Delete them (screenshot), and the world will work again.

Not sure how that potion effect thing happened but it's fixed now.
