Low Spawning rate of Hostile Mobs in Singleplayer

What I expected: hostile mobs spawning up to hostile mob cap = 79

What happened: After updates (1.4.4 and 1.4.5), in my single-player survival world, I don't encounter any hostile mobs on HARD difficulty even in dark caves or unexplored regions (entity count stays under 20 total when I enter unexplored chunks). Problem exists with new worlds, also.

Troubleshooting:
I moved my save games to another folder, then deleted the entire ".minecraft" folder. I did a fresh install from minecraft.net and made a new world as superflat "redstone ready" but hostile mobs still spawn at a very low rate and don't reach the cap (see picture)

Uninstalling, then Re-installing java 7 did not help. I also tried uninstalling java 64-bit, then installing the 32-bit version by itself, but it did not help.

This issue is unique to the 1.4.4 and 1.4.5 updates

I added 2 pictures from my Singleplayer survival world, which I've been playing in for about 2 months. Note the low entity count in the ocean biome, even after I stood there for several minutes.

I can confirm this happens with 1.4.5 in single player survival on HARD and Normal mode. Caveat: I use Optifine but no other mod, and my save is a 100% vanilla world I created in Beta 1.8.

In 1.4.5 the total entity count never exceeds 20, and hostile mobs, bats and squid hardly spawn at all, - maybe about 1 every 10 minutes.

If I copy the whole save folder to a 1.4.2 minecraft install (I have seperate .minecraft folders for each update for the purpose of tests such as this) then hostile mobs spawn as usual - in both the overworld and the Nether.

However, I found the End world is not affected by this 1.4.5 bug - the endermen spawn at their usual rate with a cap around 80.

Things I tried to get mobs to spawn in 1.4.5:

1. exit world, exit minecraft, restart minecraft, reload world - this sometimes caused 1 or 2 new hostiles to spawn and then none more

2. travel far enough to cause chunks to unload and return - either had no effect or just 1 new mob spawned

3. travel in the Nether to get to overworld locations seperated by more than 512 blocks - same effect as 2.

The following report prompted me to try returning to 1.4.2 :

Follow-up from my 10/Dec/2012 comment : I cannot reproduce the "no-hostiles" issue in a fresh vanilla 1.4.5 installation - I copied my singleplayer world to the fresh install and after a minecraft day, the hostile mob spawning returns to normal.

However I can reproduce the issue in a separate Minecraft folder modded with OptiFine_1.4.5_HD_U_D3 - if I set Terrain Animated to OFF, new hostiles stop spawning (or spawn at only 1 or 2 every 10 minutes). I switch Terrain Animated to ON and new hostile spanws return.

I tested this several times over several hours in both vanilla and modded 1.4.5.

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

This issue was resolved as of the 1.4.6 update, and I am also now using Optifine without problems. I am convinced by Marcus' troubleshooting that the problem was somehow caused by Optifine 1.4.5_HD_U_D3, despite my attempt to do a clean vanilla install. From the optifine forum, there is an edit that says OptiFine 1.4.5_HD_U_D4 "fixed monster spawning issues"

Thanks for the update.

This is not resolved, is still a pretty common bug, in 1.7.4 and now 1.7.5 is happening the same, also in the new snapshots... its boring playing like this in single, some times mobs dont spawn at all. And please dont say "maybe you are in peaceful" or "check your light level" it is a bug still present in the game in single player, what happens its that most people is happy whit this bug, with one or two mobs spawning every now and then, and they say its all fine, but it isn't. I hope Mojang can fix this. Im sorry but this IS NOT RESOLVED.

Ok. Resolving as dupe of MC-42053.

Before you start complaining you might want to look around a bit more. MC-42053
