After a small exploration away from somewhere i had set up a house (survival mode), the game slows rapidly...fps drops and i get burst (lasting a second or 2) of ok gameplay. After it does this for a minute or so the game completely freezes then crashes.

@Gabriel Jones: Thanks for the crash reports, but those are from a bukkit server, the original issue was single player issue.
Can you repeat the error with your world in single player ? If so, please upload the world.
Put it there, where is may still present in a few (days|weeks|months) when someone of Mojang will take care of that issue.
Can you put the player near the location of the bug and set the world to creative mode ?
The player is near the location, and the world is creative. The problem is that the world folder is 437 MB in size. It was on a live server when the bug showed up, so there were a lot of explorations beforehand. Here, the uploaded max filesize is 10 MB.
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
Try updating your java. This might help.
