Your 5 year old graphics card cannot handle that texture pack.
Get a newer graphics card.

My Mac is not 5 years old. I need to remove the texture pack. How can this be done?

The same way you added it - just remove it.

Unfortunately my son added it and I cannot find any file or radio button on Minecraft that offers the ability to remove a texture/resource pack

In the Minecraft Folder delete the "resource pack" folder.

Or Main Menu -> Options -> Resource Packs

Finally found and deleted the Sphax texture pack. All seems to be working so thanks very much for your help. Fingers crossed it still works tomorrow !
