I expected to see a list of possible blocks to add; none were showing
in the small menu at the bottom of the screen; just brown squares.
When I typed "e" for the full list, the system froze, and a crash
report was generated.

I think what I'm talking about is the "menu" ------- the row of squares on
the bottom of the screen. At first there are no options there, just blank
squares. My instructions said pressing "e" would bring up the full list of
block options; pressing that results in a crash. Screenshot attached.

The screenshot looks fine. Perhaps you are unaware that the creative inventory now starts out empty. I can certainly press e without a crash.
But Mr. Ymus, when I press "e" it crashes. There
is a bug somewhere relating to my (not un-typical!)
system and perhaps Java context.
I thought it possible that it starts out empty, but
without being able to open the "creative blocks"
I can't get very far.
I wouldn't be going to the trouble of submitting a
bug report with you guys if I wasn't meeting some
level of major frustration.
What's the Java version requirement for this?
Any other Mac users report similar issues??
$26 is a lot of money to spend on a game that
crashes from the get-go.
I am not saying that this is not a bug, but just that I have never seen this before. Try updating your Java.

What do you mean by "a list of possible blocks to add"? Pressing e doesn't show the full list. Where is the menu at the bottom of the screen? Can you take a screenshot? Are you using a mod?
