[MC-3991] Vanilla texture pack is broken

What I expected to happen was...:
I expected to see anvils, carrot & potato crops, cocoa beans, tripwire (anything from 1.3 and forward) normally

What actually happened was...:
Anvils, carrot & potato crops, cocoa beans, tripwire (anything from 1.3 and forward) were all pink squares.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Minecraft.
2. Play game.
3. Textures are broken.

Probably you're not using the integrated default texture pack, you're using a user made texture pack which claims to be the "Default texture pack".
Steps to solve (in that order):

Select the topmost texture pack, that's always the integrated texture pack
Redownload Minecraft (in the launcher -> Options -> Force update)
Delete all stuff in your texture pack folder claiming to be default texture pack
Delete all stuff in your texture pack folder

May be.
Several problems got solved by updating the java without seeing a direct coincidence.

But please - for the sake of searchability - attach the crash report as text file here ("Please include a copy of that file - not that screen")

Ok, please attach the file terrain.png out of /Users/ZEN/Library/Application Support/minecraft/bin/minecraft.jar - that's the texture file for the blocks.

Your terrain.png is absolutely right. The anvil, the potatoes, carrots, flowerpots etc. are all there where they should be.
Is it possible for any reason that the launcher starts another version of minecraft somewhere hidden on your harddisk ?
I'm giving up here. No more idea.

Looking at the pictures, I can see that emeralds, cooked porkchops, ender chests, and carrot-on-a-stick show normally. These textures were all added in 1.3 or later.

cocoa pods: 12w19a / 1.3
ender chest, block of emerald, tripwire hook: 12w22a / 1.3
beacon: 12w32a / 1.4
carrots, potatoes: 12w34a / 1.4
anvil: 12w41a / 1.4

--> His game is using the 12w18a terrain.png

The emerald block texture replaced the top of the locked chest (/give <player> 95), so that texture makes sense. I think for some reason it is only your terrain.png that is messed up because baked potatoes look fine. Are minecraft.jar or any folders it's in read-only for some reason? I cannot reproduce this problem.
