i was digging up blocks when suddenly everything on screen became... weird.
minecraft didn't crash and i was still able to walk around/see the box around blocks. after quitting and reloading the world, everything was fine.

You might want to check your graphics card out, it might be dying. This isn't Minecraft that's causing that.
