I can't log in to version 1.7.2 of minecraft. keep "Can't connect to Minecraft.net" I

I was able to login 3 days ago but yesterday when I tried to login, I keep getting this message. Have checked latest version of Java - is correct

I have tried playing offline but have noticed that everything that I created on my last session is not there (Many rows of dark tinted windows)

My previous password included "!" which I have since changed to eliminate this as a problem
