Choppiness and occasional spikes despite high FPS

Since 1.7.4 I'm experiencing choppy video even though my framerate stays between 40-60 FPS, sometimes dipping into the high 20s in certain areas of my worlds. However, even when my framerate is between 40-60 FPS the game feels choppy when it did not in 1.7.2.

There is plenty of free RAM and CPU power available and my graphics card is an AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 1GB VRAM which can handle StarCraft 2 on medium settings.

I'm using the default resource pack.

Having the same problems and I'm running Linux so it doesn't seem to be your computer I have a little better video card then you and my normal frame rate is 170-220 fps, but Minecraft seems to lag at times and starts looking like a slide show. When it does this my frame rate drops to 15-20 fps. I don't know if this has anything to do with this but when Minecraft lags on the debug screen the chuck updates at the top of the debug screen jumps from about 80 chunk updates to 500-800 chuck updates. Are you seeing that also on your Mac?

I haven't tested this extensively but my chunk updates are usually between 0-200 and occasionally between 200-350.

I used to get much higher than 60 FPS (~120 FPS) but it seems that it's capped to 60 on my system now. I don't know why, even with VSync: off, fast graphics, render distance: 2 and framerate: unlimited it never goes above 60 FPS. Not that that bothers me while playing (I think a solid 30 FPS or variable 30-60 FPS is enough), but just to be clear.

Also, it sounds like the problem is worse for you since for me the framerate doesn't usually go below 20 FPS and the choppiness isn't very bad. Spikes happen to me semi-frequently and aren't a huge concern either. For battling mobs it's a problem though.

I checked 1.7.2 and it does work better so It must be something that Mojang did to the game. I hope they look into this and fix it quickly.

+1 I'm having the same issue. Framerate was fine in 1.7.2 but I experience spikes of choppiness in 1.7.4 The game starts out OK but the spikes start a few minutes in and steadily get more frequent. Seems to be triggered by turning my field of view, even when I'm indoors and can't see very far ahead.

The choppiness is pretty severe: a second or more of unresponsiveness, and effectively make the game unplayable. I'm staying on 1.7.2 until this is fixed.

My computer is a late-2011 15" Macbook Pro.
Processor: 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 (quad-core)
AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB graphics
8 GB RAM
