When placing or breaking blocks in single/multiplayer, blocks sometimes reappear since upgrading to 1.7.4

Put the summary of the bug you're having here

*What I expected to happen was...I could break blocks and they wouldn't reappear...the graphics are making my brain hurt
Describe what you thought should happen here: The blocks shouldn't reappear, this is the first time this has happened. I keep trying to play thinking it is just some weird glitch, but has been consistent for the past 3-4 days since update. I even tried playing a new game, but got the same results. The blocks break, then reappear, then disappear.

I can confirm this - same thing happens to me;
I have a fairly old computer though - so I was wondering if the age of my PC and it's various components was endemic of the problem?
I usually get very bad FPS playing Minecraft = 20-30 FPS at best - but since updating to 1.7.4 I now have terrible "lag spikes" ALL the time - my FPS constantly dropping to 0 FPS. Even doing something simple as moving from point A to point B is a chore. As for punching a tree? Forget it - it's now impossible. Completely impossible for me to play Minecraft now :/

Please attach the complete output of the "Development console" tab of the launcher.

  • Click the text, press CTRL-A to select all, then CTRL-C to copy, and CTRL-V to paste in a comment on this ticket.

If the launcher closes after game start, please edit your profile and select "Launcher visibility" then, "Keep the launcher open".

Same thing is happening to me. This is the same kind of 'update lag' that you usually see only in multiplayer.

This only happens for me after playing in a world from an earlier version. In this case, I generated this amplified world in 1.7.4, then played with it for a while in 1.6.4 (I had gone back to that version for MP, and forgot to go back to 1.7.4 before playing SP). When I remembered and switched back to 1.7.4, the block reappearing happened.

Here's the dev console log:

@Micheal, according to your console output, you are experiencing general game lag, nothing more. Try reducing your view distance. There was a change between 1.7.2 and 1.7.4 and allows increased view distance for settings greater than 9.

I have the same problem, however, it is only after exploration of a world- (when some moderate changes to the environment are made) that the game takes an incredible turn for the worst, and resets my world as if reloading the save every couple of seconds. Thus blocks reappear and/or can't be picked up, positions and time is reverted upon reopening the save after exiting the session...
As far as I can tell, there is no performance lag in my situation as I can max out all the (visual) settings without any faults appearing on any newly created world.

I've got the same problem. It just started happening today. I'm on 1.7.4, with a world originally created in 1.7.2. Blocks would break then instantly be back.

Also, after getting in bed, I am stuck and the game will not let me out of bed. The "Leave Bed" button is clickable, but it will not let me out of the bed scene. Escape does not take me to the menu screen.

I'm using Mac OS X 10.9 on a Late 2011 iMac.

I have experienced similar issues with SMP in MC-41874. My comments can be found here:

Video clip, it plays out with almost comedic timing, lol!

Such a strangely crippling bug, considering the nature of the updates. I hope it doesn't give the devs TOO much of a headache. Good luck, guys and gals! Meanwhile, back to 1.7.2 for me (still broken as well, due to the social zombie "feature", but that's another story...)

Please vote this bug report up, folks. The devs need to realize how game-killing this issue really is!

Just out of curiosity, those who are more technically inclined... if you use the Java argument -XX:+DisableExplicitGC does the issue go away? (Note: this argument will eat your RAM! Only recommended on systems with 2-4GB allocated to MC, if you don't know what you're doing DON'T do it.)

Not sure this is the source of the issue just poking around trying to identify, however it cleared up the disappearing/reappearing blocks on my server. Would like to know if it can be replicated on others.

migrated

I have experienced the issue with and with it the -XX:+DisableExplicitGC on my smp server. The flag does not seen to make a difference. The issue seems more pervasive if a player is in a jungle biome. Perhaps the problem is related to the random lighting checks?

migrated

Interesting... that was the point of the DisableExplicitGC to lighten the load on the server. Jungle biomes put a reasonably heavier load on the client and server. I have a feeling this is going to be a fun one to determine the cause.

migrated

My current GC parameters are -Xmx2560M -Xloggc:/srv/minecraft/server0/logs/gc.log -verbose:gc -XX:+PrintGCDateStamps -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSIncrementalPacing -XX:ParallelGCThreads=2 -XX:+AggressiveOpts I'm willing to try something else if you have any suggestions.

The problem is exacerbated as the service runs longer. Running at a view-distance of 12 with an uptime of 120k seconds the lags was almost unbearable.

migrated

The biggest issue I have seen is some commands while they look good and are in writeups all over, seem to work better on older versions of Java and have been depreciated in newer versions. When looking up Java args make sure the doc applies to your version of Java.

Remove (obvious):
Any unnecessary gc logging (should be minimal impact anyways).
-server (if x64) implied when running x64 bit java.

Add:
-XX:+UseParNewGC which uses parallel threading for the new GC and won't overload a single core as badly.
-XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=100 This sets the maximum pause of the server while in GC to 100ms

I just squeezed a few more ms out of each tick using the following args:
START "MineCraft Server Launcher" /HIGH "C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe" -Xmx4G -Xms4G -XX:+UseParNewGC -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:ParallelGCThreads=2 -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=100 -XX:+AggressiveOpts -jar "%CD%\minecraft_server.1.7.4.jar"

The above arguments allowed me to bump up the draw distance from 10 to 15 on a Core2Duo, 10 max average 5 players. Testing placing blocks I got absolutely no flickering, in fact the response time in general seems much better. Using old/G1GC or default java args resulted in blocks flickering.

I finally had the chance to test this on my non-gaming box. After applying the JAVA arguments to the client the issue did get better, however it did not resolve the issue.

Creative:

  • Issue non-existant.

Survival & Hardcore:

  • Block lag appears!

  • Lowering my draw distance from 15 to 10 seems to resolve it (however does not account for why extra processing power is used in this mode).

  • Testing the same seed in creative provided no lag.

  • Unknown why these modes require extra processing power.

  • Blocks would either not break and reappear, or would break, reappear, and rebreak after approx. 4-5 seconds.

Another related anomaly: I can break 4 blocks deep into a mountainside, then the 1st or 2nd block will rematerialize. When I break it again, one or more blocks behind it are not there (had not rematerialized). Thus it becomes possible to destroy blocks behind solid blocks (but impossible to predict or control).

Associated failures: Sand that doesn't fall, and blocks that don't drop goods when broken. Oh, and walking into space just broken can result in being bounced out (and sometimes turned around) by rematerializing blocks.

I thought it was just a server-lag problem, but maybe there's more to it. Creative mode never drops goodies for pick-up, does it? That may be where the glitch/desynch is happening in survival mode.

PS: Let me know if you ever need to hire another experienced programmer. I think I'd enjoy solving a bunch of the thorny bugs I see on this site (and I need to find a job)

ZaCloud

Well, this is happening in offline play too in my case, so I dunno about "server lag." SOME blocks drop pick-ups in Creative, or at least did in 1.6 (grass sometimes dropping seeds, and sugar cane, I think?).

I'm a bit frustrated that they decided to release this update, RIGHT before heading off to Christmas break. @_@ That's probably why this hasn't been addressed by now. Not the best decision, if you ask me. They should've waited till after their break, so they could be here to deal with the bugs that inevitably show up on updates. Silly devs. ;P

migrated

Correct this can be observed in multiplayer or single player.

(Side note: Blocks do not drop in creative if broken directly, however say grass on top of a dirt block you break, may drop seeds.)

I noticed that performance has noticeably decreased in 1.7.4 so I tried to search if any similar issues are already reported. I found that any issue similar to what I'm experiencing is linked to this one as duplicate. I still don't understand how performance issues are connected to this one which I didn't have the chance to observe yet (unless it is the same issue as MC-858).

migrated

Check MC-38160, we've been having an ongoing discussion about this for some time. MC-43685 seems to be related as well.

What I'm seeing is chunks/regions not getting unloaded, ever. So, over time, as the server grows, it just keeps using more and more RAM until eventually it grinds to a halt, writing out all of the files when only a few or even none should be active. I can see it still updating all the previously active region files with no one logged in anymore.

migrated

There's also another glitch pretty similar to this except its with placing blocks.

galaxy_2alex

Let's keep the title simple, as some people missunerstanding it.

I keep having the same issue. Game lagging for no reason, block reappearing and mobs freezing. But it's only happening in a map generated in 1.6 loaded on 1.7.

migrated

I just got blocks reappearing in a brand new world, vanilla 1.7.4. I was walking a friend through his First Game, and this was happening when he was punching wood and dirt. There were no other obvious in-game signs of lag (I took over the keyboard a few times), but the console screen did have messages to the effect of "can't keep up!". The effect later became erratic – it eased up while he was mining coal, then came back when he was trying to pick up his crafting table.

migrated

Same issue, just downloaded the game. Only shows up in single player mode, and then only started happening after I wandered a ways from my spawn point (brand new world). It seems like server-side lag, but that doesn't make a lot of sense considering I'm playing offline, alone, in single player mode.
I am getting a lot of normal lag as well, that seems to be reduced by closing other programs and reducing render distance though, while adjusting these settings does nothing for the blocks reappearing.

Connected issue: time is passing at a very slow rate. If I watch the stars, they'll move smoothly for a few seconds then jolt back nearly to their original positions.
Also, a few areas, maybe 16x16 squares, haven't measured, just refuse to load. I can see all the way down to bedrock/lava/water/whatever happens to be there.

1.8.9 problem still here... view distance 16 = block lag in single player
view distance <12 = no block lag

I have a good pc and this didnt happen in 1.8.8...
This is a new world I created in 1.8.9
Maybe it's corrupted? Or the bug is still here?
