Changing parts of GUI to semi-transparent does not work

While I was creating a resource pack, I decided to change the GUI textures for the items to a semi-transparent black (I am using a limited palette).

However, opening the game results in an opaque texture.

The texture pack is provided below.

Can still not use your resource pack, cannot select it in the resource pack menu.
Assuming broken resource pack.

Did you unzip it first?

No. Why should I ?

Added fixed version of the resource pack.

Confirmed with fixed resource pack, but don't know if this is a bug (if there is support for semi-transparency in the GUI at all)

I can confirm that this still happens on 1.8.1.

Happens in 1.8.5 as well.

Tested this in 1.8.6, still happens.

Tested in snapshot 15w44b: Still happening

It is possible to enable alpha blending for the top layer of the inventory, but due to how openGL works and how the inventory system is rendered, you will get your transparency computed on top of the dark transparent layer of the background, leading to hard to predict results.
