Chicken Killing Issues

Had trouble killing chickens with a stone sword. Switched to creative and tried all the swords, same difficulty. When I swing the sword the chicken doesn't get hit, the sword just hits the block behind / under the chicken. I am able to kill it from certain non-specific angles, and from above, although I rarely am able to just walk up to a chicken, swing my sword, and actually hit it.
