every time i tried to spawn ib a block it failed. for example i tried to spawn on a burning furnace but i got an error saying: invalid id instead of the furnace. the command that i was using was: /give mrspits4ever 1 1

You need to use item data values (names), not the numeric identifiers now. If you don't know the specific name, look on the wiki.
Please post the exact command you were using. Also, I would strongly suggest updating your Java to 1.7.0_51
