Animals suicide by tree

I was just luring a chicken back to my base to start a chicken farm, and it decided to walk under a tree and died. The leaves of the tree were 1 block from the ground and since the chicken is only 1 block high, it should fit under with no problem, but it seems that while it can easily enter the space, it then suffocates and dies. I have seen this happen a few times now.
