when I collect a block with my hand in Minecraft, the block replaces my boots

While playing on a random server, whenever I collect a block(i.e. wheat, seeds, dirt, etc.) with my hand the block doesn't get added to my inventory, but equips as my boots, they also overlap which causes the previous block (if not removed) to be deleted. I would just like to know if it is possible to fix this, and if so, how? This also happened to a friend of mine on the same server. Yes we took into account that it may be server-side and had the owner restart the server, run an update and everything (by the way, this is a vanilla server) and it kept happening, I have also relaunched my game multiple times, and even force updated a few times.
