I named my tamed wolf derp and shot it with a bow and killed it then it said
derp was shot by verxan
i tried on an untamed named dog and didn't work could be a bug could not be.

This is a feature, no bug and already worked in earlier versions of minecraft (i'm not quite sure about that last one, you could test it).
