Note blocks not working on Mac

I used a redstone machine so that when you went out the exit, an alarm sounded. My friend tested it for me and the note graphic appeared, but nothing sounded. Then I tried. MY friend said he heard the sound. The redstone circuit was just fine with all other redstone activated things. All other Minecraft sounds were working. Re-instaling Minecraft.jar did nothing.
