While I was testing Nether Portal Connections I discovered this problem, some chunks don't render and the only way to load them is to go in the chunks and this can be used to find underground structures (to cheat)
Chunk Loading is also more unstable.
Note: this problem only started / worsened in this Snapshot
Steps to reproduce:
Just go into your world OR create a new one and walk / fly around and load chunks until you see a render error.

This isn't actually a chunk error by definition; this is a render error. A chunk error would slow you when you fly over it, and have sides of whatever block was around them, just darker. These render errors have clear sides and render correctly when you get near them. This has been an issue in Minecraft for ages, but they are much more frequent in 14w17a. This is especially visible when in gamemode 3, flying around at max speed.
@John Roush Yeah I always have to reload the chunks
@AJ Ruckman Thanks, I knew it wasn't a Chunk Error but I forgot what it was called but I just renamed the problem.
Those strip shaped ones have been a regular bug in every version of 1.6, 1.7 and 1.8. When they eventually do load they sometimes load the parts of the chunk closest to your height first. I was pointing those out in some conversation about cubic chunks on reddit ("what's the difference between chunk sections and cubic chunks?").
EDIT: To be clear, these ALWAYS load for me eventually, but often are the last chunks loaded.
Yup most terrain is not rendering until within 30 m or so, or force with F3+A as John indicated. My only difference than the original posted pics is that mine are giant areas and not just strips.
I can't reproduce the problem with Advanced OpenGL off. I have to keep Graphics on "Fast," because this is an older laptop.
I am also experiencing chunk rendering issues in 14w21b.
After looking at some of the above comments I tried turning Advanced OpenGL off, and the issue stops!
System Specs: Ubuntu Linux (64bit) Java version "1.7.0_55" OpenJDK Runtime Environment
Turning off Advanced OpenGL is a temporary fix for this bug! (For me at least)
I've never used OpenGL and I get it. Maybe worth mentioning that I'm using the 32bit version of Java. I know some bugs don't show up on the 64bit one.
@unknown: Surely does your Minecraft use OpenGL, but maybe not Advanced OpenGL.
This ticket was created with a 64bit environment:Operating System: Windows 8.1 (amd64) version 6.3, Java Version: 1.7.0_55
Seen this in the last two or three snapshots (14w19-14w21). In single player I get missing strips or worse. In multiplayer I can only walk 30m and chunks stops loading. Nearly unplayable unless turning off Advanced OpenGL.
java version "1.6.0_65"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_65-b14-462-11M4609)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-462, mixed mode)
(mac os x 10.9.3)
I have encountered this as well. Unlike the chunk loading issues in previous versions (where the chunks would all load, but in the wrong order) these chunks never load until you get within ~30m of them or force a rerender with F3+A.
Switching from "OpenGL: Fancy" to "OpenGL: Fast" seems to prevent or greatly minimize this bug.
