When I click on the Minecraft launcher, it opens a window named "launch4j" with the text "This application requires a Java Runtime environment 1.5.0" in it. What's happening, why is it happening, and how can I fix it?

Please check, if you have multiple Java installations on your PC.
If so, remove all but the latest.
For technical support please use the Mojang Support Center.
Kumasasa, I checked that. uninstalled Java 6 updates 22 and 25, and Java 7 update 6. should I uninstall Java 7 update 10 and reinstall it?
Also, when I clicked Attach A Screenshot, it just redirected me to:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/index.html
Any ideas?
Attach the screenshot by More Action -> Attach File.
Reinstalling Java 7U10 would be the best, so your system will be clean.
Also, Kumasasa, I reinstalled as you suggested and the problem ceased to occur. Sorry for not telling you guys sooner.
I have something similar on mine. I bought a new laptop. Went to minecraft.net. Signed in and clicked on Minecraft.exe. The window with "Launch4j" came up with the message, "This application requires a Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0". Went to the Java website and downloaded Java 7. Still can't download Minecraft because of said message. Java has taken down all older versions including Java 6. It is now only available to paying customers.
@Andrea Jensen: What OS ? If Windows, uninstall everything named Java, then install the latest version (1.7.0_51): http://www.java.com/en/download/.
When using a 32-bit browser on a 64-bit operating system the automatic version detection will only show the 32-bit version of Java, the 64-bit version needs to be downloaded manually: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp.
Unable to reproduce,
Please go here if you have an unmodified client: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forum/196-modded-client-support/
And here if you have a modded client: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forum/196-modded-client-support/
This sounds like you need technical support.
