I expected to start up Minecraft after being invited to a Realms server and have the button show up

That was not what happened, it indeed is not there.

It reproduces every time I start up, there's nothing I nor the owner can do to change that. She's tried readding me and everything.

Realms uses the most recent full release version (currently 1.7.9).
