When using the profile options to set the version of Minecraft to be used, downgrading from the snapshot 14w21b back down to released version 1.7.9 causes inventory to be deleted and may cause deletion of items in containers as far away as 500 blocks from the loading point.
What I expected to happen was...:
To downgrade from the snapshot 14w21b, back down to release version 1.7.9, and play the game without loosing my inventory and container items.
What actually happened was...:
After loading, my inventory was empty as well as every container within 500 blocks of me; the emptied containers included chests, furnaces, and even my horse's saddle.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Play a map in snapshot 14w21b, filling chests and containers.
2. Quit the game and restart the Minecraft Launcher
3. Change profile settings to play in version 1.7.9
4. When loading the map which was previously played in snapshot 14w21b, the character inventory will be gone.
Note: When I attempted to re-create this bug, container items didn't always disappear; however, the inventory was always lost.

I had this happen to me today with a world originally created with 14w31a (the lastest as of today). I accidentally re-entered this world after changing my profile to 1.74 Vanilla. The result was that my built world was intact but all inventory items from my person and all chests throughout my world were empty.
I reset my profile to 14w31a and re-entered my world again. All my inventory was still empty. Luckily I had saved a backup from earlier that day so I was able to recover somewhat.
I have seen a similar bug stating that downgrading wasn't supported. But this goes beyond that. Minecraft allows for multiple profiles for a given user, each with the option to set the Minecraft version. What I did was an accident but an accident that I believe will happen a lot in the future.
I entered a 14w31a world under a 1.74 vanilla profile and Minecraft gave absolutely no warning that my versions didn't match. This alone should be considered a bug, in my opinion. Had I been issued a warning I would have immediately remembered that I needed to change my profile back to 14w31a.
