Game crashes to desktop after a random interval. Sometimes as little as 5 minutes, sometimes as much as 12 hours. I can discern no pattern in what causes the crashes to happen. I've tried every combination of video settings, upgraded my Nvidia drivers, upgraded Java to the latest version, but nothing helps.
Prior to the 1.4.6 update, Minecraft was rock-solid. The crashes started happening soon after the update, and I haven't changed anything else about my system.
About every 1 out of 4 crashes, I get an error log in the folder where my minecraft.exe resides. I've attached a few of those.

Please force a crash by pressing F3 + C for 10 seconds while ingame and attach the crash report (directory .minecraft/crash-reports/ ) here.
Found nothing special in the forced crash report.
Do those crashes only occur in SMP or also in SSP or CSP ?
This indeed does happen. I haven't been able to run my server for 2 weeks since this started to occur. It still happens in 1.4.7 and appears to me as an SMP issue only.
Duplicate of MC-588.
In my opinion, this issue is not a duplicate of MC-558, which was a predictable crash in previous version of Minecraft, whereas my issue is an unpredictable crash that happens only in 1.4.6.
After further research, it seems that the problem is due to the version of LWJGL that ships with 1.4.6. I upgraded to LWJGL version 2.8.4 and haven't experienced a crash since. So, while the problem may not be with the Minecraft code itself, the entire Minecraft distribution with associated libraries is not stable on some systems.
Two of the crashes have to do with renaming of files:
The other something with graphics:
