Beacon will not work in nether

I am trying to set up a beacon in the nether but it will not work. I have removed all blocks between the beacon and bedrock but it will refuse to work (the gui will not give me any choices). This is strange as on the wiki page it states that beacons will work in the nether under the conditions I have met and they have previously done so in other locations. The beacons do have the necessary mineral blocks to support them. Please resolve this issue.
