Redstone is not animating correctly

The redstone, when placed, doesn't animate correctly.

What I expected to happen was...:
When I placed redstone next to another, I expected the redstone to create a neat straight trail like this: ----------.

*What actually happened...
The redstone animated like this: ||||||||||

Steps to Reproduce:
1. I use a MacBook Pro with OSX. I use any version of MC that is 1.7.4 and above.
2. Go to singleplayer.
3. Try placing a line of redstone. Corners will animate properly but other than that the "straight line" will look like this: ||||||||||, this happens in any direction I place the redstone.
