Dispensers not placing/dropping pumpkins

Dispensers are not placing/dropping pumpkins. I am aware that dispensers are meant to place pumpkins, however I stumbled upon this bug while trying to use them to DROP pumpkins. I noticed that they did make the clicking sound when activated, but did not drop the pumpkin. Because I am aware of the odd nature of pumpkins and how must be placed, I searched it in Google. I then learnt they are meant to be placed, so I tested this. I DID have a block underneath the spot where the pumpkin should have been placed. The dispenser does make the clicking sound, and there is the smoke animation, however the pumpkin is not placed and the item remains in the dispenser.
