Redstone Torch PLaced on the Side of a Block Oriented Incorrectly

when I placed a torch on the side of a grass block, the torch's hitbox was highlighted correctly, but the torch itself showed up as though placed on a block to the right, though there was no block there.

Normal torches react the same way, apparently.
