Lighting changes with elevation

In the first photo shown on the left, the lighting is darker. On the second photo shown on the right, I jumped and the lighting became much lighter. You can't really tell that well in the screenshot, but in-game the lighting was much more different.

Instead of jumping, if you place a block underneath you, does the lighting then look similar to the jumping lighting?

This may be the gloominess of depth coming into play.

This bug is more clear in the screen shots I attached. Seen from the top of stairs leading down to the floor of a corridor, the entire corridor is visible. From the floor of the corridor, visibility is maybe ten blocks. The corridor is at bedrock level, so any "gloominess of depth" would be in play, but I consider this a bug because that doesn't make any damn sense.

I'm using Mac OS X as a client to a Linux server. I've seen this behavior in 1.3.2 and 1.4.2.

This could just be void fog, which was intentionally added to the game around Beta 1.8. The Minecraft Wiki says that Void Fog affects all layers from Y=28 downward, so this is merely an annoyance, not a bug.

I think if I can see the floor from the ceiling, I should be able to see the ceiling from the floor.
