Glass Light Propagation

I was away from Minecraft for a few years and my memory on some the details is a little fuzzy. But I remember that around the time smooth lighting was implemented the propagation (or extension) of light through glass was broken. I also remember I wasn't the only one upset about it and a fix was promised eventually. So when I returned to Minecraft almost 3 years later I was more than a little disgruntled that this hadn't been fixed yet. Couple months after my return here I'm still upset enough that I went to search for the issue to check the status on it, and I couldn't find one. So I apologize if this is a duplicate, but, I want to make sure it hasn't been forgotten. I really miss my glass chandeliers. Glowstone is too ugly for most things, redstone lamps don't fit with every motif, and spamming torches gets old.

Could you be more specific on what the issue is? Or perhaps include some screenshots? You mention it being broken, but don't really specify in what way.

It used to be if you put down a torch (with a block light of 14?), and placed glass next to it the air block on the other side of the glass would still be at 13ish instead of 12. With several pieces of connected glass one could easily get an extra 4 or 5 blocks of light from a single torch. Which allowed for the crafting of functional chandeliers and hidden torch lighting.

Oh this effect was also sometimes referred to as "light piping."

Intended. Light levels are supposed to decrease by one for each block traveled from the source.

The extension of light with glass was intended as well. Notch promised it would be re-implemented after the lighting code was updated. And those updates were long and bumpy. That much I remember. Please change the status.

Can you provide a link to this "promise"? I can't even find any information on this change or the previous behavior. You'll also have to remember that Notch isn't involved in Minecraft's development anymore.

I think the primary concern here is performance, but various blocks do alter light levels as they pass through them. Water and Ice, for instance, decrease light propagation by an additional two blocks, and Stairs, Slabs, and Farmland are all one level brighter than they otherwise would be, but block propagation completely.

I honestly didn't expect it to be this hard to find. I'm still searching off and on as I think of new search criteria. So far all I found were a couple esoteric references from others about glass passing 100% of light they received which may have changed around alpha 1.0.15. Considering I started playing minecraft on my friends computer just before alpha 1.0.12 that would make sense. Anyway, it may take me days, weeks, or months. However, if its still on the internet I will find it.
