Whenever an item is thrown, it always faces north/south and does not rotate. It does not matter what direction the item is thrown, either. This is also in effect for thrown items like eggs, potions, snowballs, etc. I'm not sure if the removed rotation is intended, but I'm almost certain that something is wrong.
