Breaking blocks doesn't update

Breaking a block sometimes leaves a ghost image on a multiplayer server. Placing a block next to the ghost block sometimes causes it to update and vanish.
(I broke the grass block between the two pictures)
I tried to get a video of it, but I couldn't compress it down far enough.
