There is an accidental L after <amount>, as seen here.
There is also another XP command, and that one has the L.

This is an intentional feature. The 'L' stands for 'levels'. Adding the 'L' at the end of the amount of XP just gives you that many levels. Without the 'L' it would be in single XP orbs.
That is intended. As listed, there are 2 ways of using the xp command, ether in raw xp, or in levels. For example:
/xp 20 player
adds 20 experience points
/xp 20L player
adds 20 levels
