The signal strength bars on the Servers screen will load as per usual, but only ever show as being low strength (1 green bar). This is obviously a bug, not due to genuine lag, as a local server shows the same results.
Screenshot provided shows a public server (address hidden) and a local server both showing the bug.

Ive been getting this too alot since the Open For Lan feature got added as a lot of servers ending in on the 25565 port results in 15000ms ping even though that is not what i be getting from a different port
It seems this issue may be OS specific. Tried it on the same computer with Ubuntu 12.10, and I get full bars. Can someone else who dualboots confirm?
So we've got someone on Windows 7 who gets it, and one who doesn't. I'm on Windows 8 and I get it, but on Ubuntu I don't. This seems all over the place.
Brian: do you get the same error if you backup your current .minecraft folder and install minecraft fresh? (It looks like you're currently modded due to the BuildCraft)
This bug was introduced on the smp/ssp merge and was then fixed on 1.4.7 with the help of a user. Did not see it happen ever since, and i used to have severe problems with it.
Ok, I've found a fix for this thanks to the modding community. This change to the code: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1461783-fixing-lag-and-freezing-when-joining-a-mp-server/
It fixes the ping error entirely (I know get accurate ping results!) and also fixed a recent bug I've been getting which caused the client to lag for ~15 seconds when joining a server. For those getting the error, try the .class file out (following the install instructions, obviously) and you should hopefully be fixed too!
Ya, I've just noticed that
