Bowls and Pumpkin pies are not place-able as blocks.
What I expected to happen was...:
When you place a pumpkin pie, it will look similar to a cake, and bowls have no three-dimensional model.
What actually happened was...:
Nothing
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Obtain Bowl or Pumpkin Pie
2. Right-Click on a placeable block, like dirt, or wood.
3. No Block is placed

Neither of the wiki pages talk about them being placed as blocks, and they were never able to be placed anyway.
