I was playing a survival world when I saw the pre-release come out. I decided to switch to it. This morning I decided to go back to 1.7.10 to do some things. When I opened the world I went to get something out of a chest. When I opened the chest there was nothing there. This was the same for every chest I had placed.

Isn't It a bug though? This should not happen. I realized I should have backed it up but this also shouldn't happen in my opinion.
Additionally- Going back to the pre-release the items are still gone.

Ofcourse they are still gone, items don't have item ID's anymore in 1.8. 1.7 doesn't know how to handle that data and discards it.

OK... so when going into 1.8 you need to remember you cannot go back to previous versions?

This is user-error. Going back to older versions is not supported without making proper backups first.
