Peonies were destroyed on their own

I left my house for awhile, about 20-30 chunks away, and when I came back after a long period of time, peonies I had planted outside of my house were on the ground destroyed. Is it a glitch or intended? The flowers were near torches to the left and right of them, but not on top. They were tile drops when I found them.
