I made a new 1.8 Creative world with cheats enabled and bonus chest. In Creative mode I can break blocks but as soon as I swap to Survival I can't break anything. I can hit entities, but no blocks or grasses can be broken.
When I click on a grass my hand/tool swings once and doesn't complete the break.
When I click+hold on a block the same.
If I swap back to Creative I can break blocks.
A new world started as Survival is able to break blocks.

This happened to me too. It isn't in Adventure mode, and I know because I typed "/gamemode survival"
After having this issue:
Please force a crash by pressing F3 + C for 10 seconds while in-game and attach the crash report ([minecraft/crash-reports/crash-<DATE>-client.txt|http://hopper.minecraft.net/help/finding-minecraft-data-folder]) here.
Please attach the complete output of the "Game Output (Your Minecraft name) " which can be found on the fourth tab of the launcher.
If the launcher closes after game start, please edit your profile and select "Launcher visibility" then, "Keep the launcher open".
You are in Adventure mode.
