I have an area completely enclosed by stone walls. There are 3 wooden gates. I have 3 cows and 3 baby cows in that enclosure. After I loaded my world I noticed that one of the baby cows was outside of the enclosure. I have the impression this happens regularly with sheep, pigs and chicken too.

This happens to me all the time, even in 1.7.10.
You just can't contain them. Maybe try a 2x2 fence around them.
