Minecraft unplayably slow after 1.8 update

*What I expected to happen was that I play minecraft and my character moves smoothly through the landscape.

*What actually happened was once version 1.8 became active, my character does not move smoothly. Constant freezing in movement. Slow.

Steps to Reproduce:
Just load the game and the problem persists.
