Maps in item frames sometimes disappear/delete semi-permanently

If I walk far enough away from a map-in-item-frame such that the chunk it's in unloads, when I walk back, sometimes it's gone. All the other blocks in the chunk pop back into existence, but not the map or frame themselves. When I say "gone" I mean that it's totally invisible, and punching or clicking the area where the map is supposed to be does nothing as though there was nothing there- I can't pull the map off the frame or punch it off the wall. The only way to get the map back is to destroy the block that the item frame was attached to. This problem is semi-permanent in the sense that once it happens, it never reappears again unless I completely close out of the map back to the main menu and then log in again. (Manually reloading chunks/textures/etc through the F3 debug options has no effect).

Note: this bug is hard to reproduce. It only happens maybe one out of every five or ten times I load a map, and only on certain maps. In testing, I created a bunch of superflat worlds and got it to happen on two of them fresh on creation, so it's not a case of old maps or file corruption.

Dupe of MC-65040

migrated

It's definitely related, but not sure about a dupe. 65040 says that that bug requires 'constantly loaded chunks', except I'm not sure that's been the case for me. I'm pretty sure I got this to happen a couple times on superflat worlds where I had teleported away from the initial spawn point to [0,100,0] on a fresh world with nothing else in it besides a few inert blocks with a map on it. I'm not sure what would be keeping those chunks loaded in such a situation.

Is this still an issue in 15w42a or later ?

Ticket resolved as incomplete, because no answer in a reasonable amount of time (1+ year), if it still happens, please update the ticket.

I can confirm this in 1.20.2

I had a wall with item frames and all maps are gone.

My server is running in local computer by server.jar in version 1.20.2

Server output says

[13:10:01] [Server thread/ERROR]: Not a string
[13:10:01] [Server thread/ERROR]: Error loading saved data: map_39
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid map dimension: null

It cannot load normally saved map data I think. There is many of these logs with difference map name.
