Duplicate of MC-45009. Version downgrading is not supported. Newer versions store the data differently than older ones, and if you open with the older version, it will not recognize the data, and to avoid crashing, clears it.

While MC-45009 is marked 'Resolved' it still does not answer 'Why' plain, vanilla Minecraft Items are Deleted. Computer could check the IDs of the Items very easily. It just seems 'malicious' & 'vindictive!' for trying something that Mojang does not have time or inclination to do.
So while you see it as 'resolved' - I do not see that way at all.

The format used to store IDs in 1.8 are different than 1.7. In 1.7, seeing this 'incorrect' data, assumes corruption, and clears it to prevent crashing. Version downgrading has never been supported for reasons such as this. If mods are involved, Mojang cannot be responsible for the way they handle item data information.

CubeTheThird: There is one tiny flaw in your argument about switching versions or using a mod. Do you see it?
If the 'difference' in storing IDs is the ONLY reason, we would lose Inventory EVERY-TIME Mojang created a NEW version.
And, since we do NOT, that means there is some mechanism to account for the differences in versions.

I don't see the point you are making. There isn't a new type of ID system in every version; this was specifically introduced in 1.8. The newest version is designed to take the 1.7 IDs and convert them to the new system.

"... that means there is some mechanism to account for the differences ..."
No loss of plain, vanilla Minecraft Inventory Items
Dupe of MC-45009
