VBOS crashes Minecraft or causes severe flickering

Upon first attempt to enable VBOS chunks began to flicker in and out of frame before the whole application froze and stopped respoding. After restarting Minecraft with VBOS still enabled it crashed instantly with the attached error (No MC crash report was generated):
