Map cursor disappears/green cursor won't disappear

I was playing on a server (vanilla) and walked around, exploring and drawing a map, but suddenly the cursor that shows your position disappeared! when i walked around i could still continue drawing the map, but no cursor! relogged and still the same! then i went back to check the map that was inside an item frame, its cursor didn't disappeared, i took it off to check if its helping but that made another glitch, the green arrow was still on the map even if i removed the map from the wall
so this 2 bugs:
-Cursor from player randomly disappears
-Cursor from wallmap wont disappear after destroyed
(at the screenshot i am standing there where the wallmap was)

Note: this can be fixed by restarting server, but its still annoying because you cant just restart every server

Also experienced this bug. Every map that is ever added to a frame on the SMP server I'm on exhibits this behavior. Restarting the server works until a map is placed into a frame again.

Map + Item Frame + multiplayer + copies of map = maps broke, all the time. Random things from not rendering to no cursor to too many cursors, we have experienced pretty much all manner of maps being broke.

I don't know if it helps to diagnose or fix this, but I have observed that when this happens if I go far enough away that I'm out of the map's area, I can see half of my grey location marker protruding out from under the map's image. It seems as if my location marker is being drawn under the map, or that the map is being drawn an extra time on top of itself.

Texturepack Maybe?

migrated

Look at the picture, its default texturepack, this bug gets fixed by saving and quitting in singleplayer and restarting the server at multiplayer, at multiplayer it isn't always possible to restart the server if it isn't your server and thats why the bug is annoying, it happens pretty often if you got multiple map copies and 1 inside an item frame!

I experienced this issue as well; while playing multiplayer via LAN (single player world opened to a friend to join) the other player created 3 map copies and placed them in item frames throughout the area covered by the map. The green arrows did not actually appear on my copy of the map until I visited the location of the item frames. Shortly after all the item frames had been "discovered" and appeared on the map the indicator arrow for the other player stopped displaying on all versions of the map (in frames and held by both of us). After meeting up with the other player we swapped maps and I temporarily dropped mine to see what effect only them holding the map had; after I picked up my copy of the map again the other player's indicator was now shown but mine was missing. The other player then dropped their copy of the map and I handed them my copy, at which point both of our indicator arrows disappeared from the map.

After deciding to do away with all the item frames to try to fix the issue we found that the map was still stuck showing only the item frames' green arrows and neither of our player indicators even though all item frames had been removed. We then placed all the map copies in a single pile inside a chest and exited the game. I later resumed the game in single player mode again and upon taking one of the maps out of the chest it quickly re-drew from blank and appeared to be functioning normally (no green indicator arrows and my white arrow correctly displayed). I have not yet tested what happens when another player gets involved again.

Edit: Bug encountered in v1.4.5 running in 64 bit java on Win7.

Further Edit: The other player says that if they weren't looking directly at the map but had it in-hand (so it as visible at an angle along the bottom of their view) they would occasionally see one of the missing player indicator arrows appear for a moment; maybe the possible z-fighting mentioned in related issues is going on between the map and the indicators?

I experience this issue on singleplayer frequently. Relogging fixes it, however, after relogging, all other map locations that should be marked on the map in green disappear until I get close enough to it, at which point it appears on the map again and stays there until the next glitch.

Steps:

1. Have a non-empty map and an item frame.
2. Put the item frame on the wall, and put the map in it.
3. Remove them both by punching them off and pick them up.
4. Do this 3 or 4 more times and your white marker will disappear.

Description:

This happens in single player and multiplayer. Closing the world and reopening fixes it for SSP but from what I am reading the server itself needs to be reset to fix it. This does not need 2 of the same map to exist.

There is however another issue with passing a cloned map to someone and them giving it back. It causes their white cursor to stay on the map. I'm assuming the fix to the first issue would fix this by making sure the cursors get removed at the right times, but I figured any extra detail could be useful.

Same problem occurs for me as well. I'm supposing since the arrows sometimes appear when you go off the map edges, and disappear when you wander back onto them mean that the order in which the server, or client draws the data isn't organized strictly.

In other words, it draws the map overtop some of the arrows, or something similar rather than displaying things as they should. I have an off-hand guess that this might have something to do with copies of the map being stored on both the server side and client side to save on bandwidth, although I currently have reservations about this because even wiping my Minecraft directory off of my hard-drive and reacquiring all data seems to have no bearing on the state of the maps so this might have little or nothing to do with the problem.

It's frustrating, because I'm trying to map out locations for my friends in multiplayer, and with the maps glitched like this it's almost impossible to navigate properly.

Happens in prerelease 1.4.7 vanilla SMP; no texture packs or anything fancy.

Fully zoomed out map cloned two times; one map placed on item frame on wall; the other two copies distributed to two players who both kept them in their inventory hotbar

It shows the green arrow where the item frame is but the players don't show as arrows. I think it still lets you reveal unexplored locations if you are in the vicinity

This bug is easily reproduce-able, and well past time to be reproduced and set to confirmed status.

Fully agree with David B. Maps are almost unusable because of this. /vanilla 1.4.7 smp client

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

II gonna test if it is still buggy

The White cursor didn't disappeared yet, but i'm still testing. The green markers still won't disappear after removing an item frame, so this bug is still there (changing the title to add this aspect)

I made some tests and found another bug! After destroying the item-frames the green cursors won't disappear AND you can't add any new green cursors! And after reloading (save and quitting), the green cursors loaded properly, but the white cursors disappeared, so the bug with disappearing cursor isn't removed! So this bug isn't removed in 1.5! I updated the affected version!
EDIT: The white cursor just appears if you destroy all the item frames with maps and reload (save and quit) the map!

I encountered the bug in 1.5.2 just now. Restarting the server does indeed bring back the white cursor. However the problem comes back not long after restart. I first saw the issue right after I created my second map. The first map lost the cursor, but the second map worked fine. I had the first map in an item frame in my base, and that may be part of the bug. I also noticed that the green cursor did not disappear when I removed the map from the item frame until I reset the server.

This is still happening in version 1.7.9

Rocko, This has been around Since v1.4.1 in Oct 2012 when Maps were first added:
see: MC-73

The answer is that Jeb, through the proxy of Talvin81, has deemed that resolving this issue would likely be much more time consuming that the feature is worth. If there really is enough interest, I myself may dig into seeing if I can fix it... but don't hold your breath. 🙂

In my opinion, this bug tends to break the usefulness of maps, except to put them on a wall. Maps are highly useful, but this bug makes it hard to impossible to navigate the way you are meant to, and makes me use them less.
